Communication from May 30th, 2025: Recent Updates and Upcoming Happenings

Communication from May 30th, 2025

Greetings Marvellians,

I write as the summer is just getting underway to provide updates on recent and upcoming happenings associated with the Society. We will have a busy 2025-26 academic year and are excited about some new events, both confirmed and potential, on the horizon. We are especially excited about our joint participation in this year’s British Milton Seminar, coming in the Fall. Please see below for more information on the Seminar.

We held the Society’s Annual Meeting in early April after returning from a successful RSA. At the meeting, we appointed to two members to new three-year terms to the Executive Committee. Hyunyoung Cho (George Mason) has agreed to serve another term on the Committee and will be joined by new committee member Jonathan Koch (Pepperdine). They are joined by current members, Stephen Hequembourg (Magen David Yeshivah), Jahidul Alam (University of Louisiana Lafayette), and Lottie Page (Princeton). Julianne Werlin (Duke) will continue in her role as Vice-President and Matthew Augustine (St. Andrew’s) in his role as Secretary. Many thanks to Tessie Prakas (Scripps), who is cycling off the committee after her three-year term.

Here is what we definitely have on the calendar for the coming academic year:

1. As I mentioned, the Marvell Society has agreed to co-host this year’s annual British Milton Seminar, which will be held online on October 24th. The Seminar is being convened by Hugh Adlington and Sarah Knight this year and will focus generally on the life and works of Milton and Marvell. There will be two 90-minute sessions with two 25-30-minute papers in each session. Please see the attached CFP for more information about the Seminar and how to submit proposals for papers. Proposals are due by August 29th.

2. We will also be convening our usual four panels at the Renaissance Society of American conference, this year held in San Francisco on February 19-21, 2026. We are currently developing the CFPs for these panels. Look for an email from me with more information and a posting to the RSA site by next week.

3. Our annual meeting will be held online sometime in mid-March, after we return and recover from RSA.

Please also stay on the lookout for updates to our long-outdated website. We will be making significant changes to the website over the summer, including updating the Society information currently on there. We are hopeful that the site will become a space for the sharing of all Marvell and 17th-century related events as well as for the promotion of recent work in these fields.

I will be in touch shortly with the CFP for our RSA panels. Until then,

Chris
